In celebration of Good Deeds Day, the Long Island Volunteer Center (LIVC) hosted a President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) ceremony at the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island in Garden City on April 6, 2025 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Twenty-six students, ages 9 to 17, received Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards for their volunteer efforts that totaled 4,365 hours at 43 nonprofit and community-based organizations. Leading by example, these students used their time and talents to help build community, advance the human condition, and expand the reach and impact of the nonprofits and community organizations they served. About the President’s Volunteer Service Award: In 2003, the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation founded the President’s Volunteer Service Award to recognize the important role of volunteers in America’s strength and national identity. This award honors individuals whose service positively impacts communities in every corner of the nation and inspires those around them to take action, too. The PVSA has continued under each administration, honoring the volunteers who are using their time and talents to solve some of the toughest challenges facing our nation. Led by the AmeriCorps and managed in partnership with Points of Light, this program allows Certifying Organizations to recognize their most exceptional volunteers. Different levels of earned awards are bestowed based on hours volunteered at nonprofit organizations. 
 
LIVC has been a designated certifying organization for the PVSA since 2003 with the following individuals and groups recognized:

	<li>Adelphi University Freshman Community Action Program (FCAP) – weeklong community service projects in the Hempstead community</li>
	<li>Prom Boutique volunteers who assisted with our gown giveaway initiative</li>
	<li>Mineola High School Volunteer Center students who helped with myriad local and international community service projects</li>
	<li>AARP volunteers who assisted with IRS free volunteer income tax assistance for seniors and families eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit</li>
	<li>Volunteers at the Long Island State Veterans Home who served the needs of veterans permanently housed there and</li>
	<li>Volunteer case managers called the Green Shirts who traveled to Long Island for Superstorm Sandy to assist with recovery efforts</li>
	<li>Three high school students received awards at our 25th anniversary gala</li>
	<li>Lifetime achievement award for over 4000 hours was conveyed to Katherine Gibson at our 30th anniversary event</li>
</ul>
 
Under the leadership of our board chair and certifying officer for the PVSA, Patricia Force, who took on this initiative in 2022, we have seen it grow and flourish from an original 3 to now 26 youth awardees!
